How I See Myself in the Movie "The Worst Person in the World"

A reflection on the movie "The Worst Person in the World" and how it relates to my own life.

June 24, 2026

What makes Julie the worst person in the world? I thought this movie is about the trauma of her relationship with her father that effecting her life. And turned out it is about what happens to almost everyone in their 20s or 30s. Watching this movie, I felt like I was watching my own life.

At first, I thought Julie's choices were only because of her trauma. But now I think the movie shows how hard it is to be in your 20s or 30s. We don't know how to make decisions either small or big ones. We have too many dreams at the same time, and we want a perfect life that does not exist.

Why Julie feels like "the worst"

  • Changing her career too many times: She tries many different jobs because she doesn't know what she really wants. She always thinks the next thing will be better. I feel like she is trying to prove something to other people instead of herself.
  • Fear of commitment: She does not want kids and she is scared of being stuck and losing her freedom.
  • She is never satisfied: She is never happy with what she has. She thinks there is a perfect life out there. In her relationship with Aksel, she feels so much difference between them, so she cheats and ends up with a new guy. But even with the new guy, problems start again because life and love are never perfect.

Common problems in our 20s and 30s

These feelings are valid for people in our age:

  • Quarter Life Crisis: That feeling when you are young but stressed because you don't have your life figured out yet.
  • Hard to make smart decisions: We want to do big things (be ambitious), but we often act on our feelings instead of thinking clearly.
  • Fear of Commitment: We are scared that if we choose one thing, we lose everything else (I see Myself Here Lol).
  • Never feeling enough: We feel like our life and our love stories are not as good as they should be.
  • Wanting Freedom: We just want to be free to find out who we are.

Beautiful things we learn from this movie

  • It is okay to explore: Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are how we learn what we truly want.
  • You have to try: You will never know if you like something (or someone) if you never try it.
  • Perfect love does not exist: Every relationship has easy parts and hard parts. Running away to a new person does not mean the new relationship will be better than the last one.
  • Love is not always the end: You can love someone very much and still realize you cannot stay together.
